W-Soccer: SMU at Houston

Postby DanFreibergerForHeisman » Wed Sep 19, 2012 9:39 pm

The Mustangs start their final trip through C-USA on Friday night at Houston (7pm).

SMU has had a nice 4-4 start to the season in non-conference play, with three of the losses by one goal to Top 25 teams.

The Cougars are 4-4 in non-conference play as well, but haven't really been challenged by any top teams.

SMU typically handles Houston (SMU is 10-1-1 vs. UH all time), but the past three years have seen a 1-0 win, a 1-0 loss, and a 1-1 draw, so it certainly hasn't been as dominating as the record indicates lately.

Houston has a new coaching staff this season too, so it will be very interesting to see how this one goes.

Houston up 1-0 at HT.

This is the kind of game that drives you absolutely nuts as an SMU fan. The Mustangs with well over 2/3 of the possession and in total control, but Houston scores a goal on their only shot of the half on a 30-yard floater just over the outstretched Lauryn Bodden.

SMU has 4 shots and 3 on goal in the first half, and to be fair the UH keeper has been fantastic. She has intercepted about (no exaggeration) 8 great SMU crosses so far.

We definitely have a goal in us - but I hope we have two!

We honestly should beat teams like Houston, but in the grand scheme of things when you are down 1-0 and 2-1 on the road in conference, you have to be relatively content to share the points and live to fight another day.

We needed to put this one away early, and giving them the fluke goal in the first definitely gave them some life. Giving up a PK just two minutes after equalizing at 1-1 certainly didn't help either.

That's three of our nine games that have gone to 2OT now - and we were a bit shorthanded tonight too. Credit to the team for fighting until the end and salvaging the draw.

Rice Sunday!

Was the PK call legitimate?

It was hard to tell, but I imagine it was.

It looked similar to the one against TCU where one of our D attempted a tackle just inside the box, but the ball got behind her so she had to trip the opponent.
