W-Soccer: SMU Snubbed By NSCAA All-Region Team

Postby DanFreibergerForHeisman » Tue Dec 04, 2012 10:57 pm

After naming Mallory Baum and Courtney Smith to the second Central All-Region team in 2011, the NSCAA shockingly did not name a single Mustangs player to the three all-region teams in 2012.

Granted, on first glance at the SMU stats, the numbers that jump out are Shelby Redman and Kenzie Scovill, but other forwards in the region did put up some gaudy numbers so it's hard to complain about them too much.

At midfield, Baum had another solid season, and also made the first C-USA All-Conference team, so it's a bit of a shock she didn't get a nod over players from places like Oral Roberts and Lamar.

The biggest oversight is Courtney Smith though. Seriously? She was 20th in all of NCAA Division I in assists (26th in assists per game), with a decent amount of them coming in non-conference play where we had a very difficult out-of-conference strength of schedule. Not to mention her solid defense.

It's understandable (but still unfair) she only made third-team all-conference considering her assists were down during conference play. But that fact was because every single C-USA team blatantly schemed to take her out of the game. Plus, she was playing through injuries for a decent amount of conference play as well (as we all remember the shoulder injury against CC) - and she didn't miss a single game!

Hopefully this will serve as motivation for the team over the offseason as we get ready to take on the BIG EAST in 2013.
