Mustangs Earn Four AAC Postseason Women’s Tennis Honors

IRVING, Texas (AAC/SMU) - SMU women's tennis earned two of the three major American Athletic Conference postseason women's tennis honors, the league announced on Wednesday. Hadley Doyle and Taylor Johnson were also placed on the coveted All-Conference Team.

The reigning AAC Tournament Champions were mentioned four times across the postseason awards. Graduate student Taylor Johnson was named Player of the Year and head coach Jeff Nevolo was awarded Coach of the Year.

Johnson — hailing to the Hilltop from Prescott, Arizona — went 12-9 in dual matches, finishing out the season on a four-match win streak in singles play. With her partner Lana Mavor, the pair was 13-5 in doubles (10-5 in dual matches).

Johnson and Mavor earned the American's automatic qualification to the NCAA Doubles Championship to be played May 20-25 at the Greenwood Tennis Center in Stillwater, Oklahoma, after the conclusion of the team championship, which runs from May 17-19 at the same site.

Following being named the head coach in July of 2019, Nevolo is in the midst of his fifth season with the Mustangs. He led SMU, coming in ranked as high as No. 32 by the ITA this year, to its second straight American Athletic Conference Championship and NCAA tournament appearance.
Additionally, this is also Nevolo's second consecutive AAC Coach of the Year honor.

Graduate student Hadley Doyle and Johnson were also both placed on the All-Conference Team, taking up two out of 14 available spots.
Doyle, the 2023 AAC Player of the Year, currently holds a 12-5 singles record going into NCAA play. This record includes one win over a nationally ranked opponent. The Colleyville native also boasts 11 wins in doubles play, partnering with junior Drew Morris.

Up Next
Next up for SMU (13-11), the Mustangs will first face Alabama (15-10) in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday, May 4th at 1:00 p.m. The Mustangs secured their 13th NCAA tournament appearance in program history by earning an automatic bid after winning their second straight American Athletic Conference Championship.
