UT buddy of mine just gave me an unconfirmed report that Gilbert is on SMU’s campus right now.

Didn't he have an injury to his throwing shoulder?

yes.

"AUSTIN— Less than two weeks after losing his job as Texas' starting quarterback, junior Garrett Gilbert underwent shoulder surgery Tuesday and will miss the rest of the season.

Gilbert is believed to have suffered the unspecified injury to his right (throwing) shoulder during the Longhorns' season opener against Rice, team trainer Kenny Boyd said in a statement released by UT. Boyd said Gilbert was not affected in practice leading up to the second game, in which Gilbert threw two early interceptions against BYU before being replaced by Case McCoy and David Ash.

"After that, it got progressively worse," Boyd said. "We did an MRI on the shoulder last week, and after our medical staff looked at the results, we recommended that he have surgery ."

...But coach Mack Brown said he’s looking forward to having Gilbert back.
“He’s a tough kid that fought through some pain to continue to play,” Brown said. “We also know that Garrett is a very smart kid with a great understanding of our offense, so we’re excited that he’ll still be around.”

From the way brown talks about it I wonder if this was an ongoing injury he tried to play through

I think a lot of people did, but if JJ wants him, what do you say to that, eh?

He's a big guy and maybe could do well, but he can't throw a spiral. That's a problem. Maybe less pressure and not playing in front of 100k is his solution

well he would certainly have an opportunity to throw down field unlike the Greg Davis bubbles he has been throwing for 2 yrs.
