DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU volleyball team won the last three sets, taking two by 10 points each, to knock off Tulane 3-1 (27-29, 25-15, 25-15, 25-19) Sunday in Moody Coliseum. Courtney Manning led the charge defensively, recording a season-high 12 blocks, reaching double figures for the third time in the last four matches.
Dana Powell led the Mustangs with 13 kills and matched Sidney Stewart with 14 digs. Jessica Oliver and Caroline Young each added 12 kills in the win. SMU (7-12, 3-4 Conference USA) had a season-high 16.0 blocks, while the Green Wave (6-11, 1-5 C-USA) had just four blocks.
The Mustangs allowed Tulane to hit back-to-back serves only seven times in the second and third sets, winning each 25-15 to take a 2-1 lead in the match. After SMU came back from four points down in the first to tie the opening set 21-21, Tulane was able to hold off the Mustangs for a 29-27 win to take the early advantage.
The second set was even to the midway point, knotted at 10-10 before SMU caught fire. The Mustangs out-scored Tulane 15-5 to even the match. The hot streak carried over out of the break, as SMU jumped out to a 16-8 before taking the 10-point win for a 2-1 lead in the match.
SMU was determined to finish the match in four sets, scoring eight of the first 12 points for an early lead in what proved to be the final set. The Green Wave managed to cut the lead to one point twice in the middle of the set, but the Mustangs immediately stretched the lead to five, 15-10, before going on to end the match with the 25-19 win.
The Mustangs travel to Memphis, Tenn., to take on Memphis on Friday at 7 p.m. SMU will wrap up the road trip at UAB Sunday. The Blazers currently lead the conference at 7-0 in league play.
